Over the past couple of years I have experienced a significant reduction in the ability to deal with daily tasks and interactions (family, work and social) which a few years ago I would have dealt with easily and without any fear of the impact on the health. For instance I have not been able to drive out of town to visit my mother who is 84 – rather she has driven through the Auckland traffic from a small Waikato town to see me. Also I am aware that my ability to articulate both in written word and speech has changed.

June 2021:
Experienced lack of focus and concentration and irritability. At this point I became aware that my heart rate seemed faster than normal. I underwent a couple of kinesiology sessions and had some improvement in my symptoms I was experiencing.

July 2021:
After many years of wellness and a handful of visits to the doctor in last 10 years I first became very unwell, my own doctors’ clinic was unable to see me. I went to North Shore Hospital and was sent to Shore Care in Takapuna where I presented with difficulties breathing and wheezing. Diagnosed with bronchitis. Unable to go to work for 10 days, and once returned to work, extremely tired and unable to walk very far (usually walk 5km daily) and climbing stairs extremely tiring and left me breathless. This continued until October before began to improve in stamina.

October 2021
At this time began to have head pain – extreme pain in head, so shocking when came on would make me feel dizzy and nauseous. No warning – pain would come on, sometimes last for an hour and abate other times would be constant for a few hours.

December 2021
Just before Christmas around 23/24th began to feel extremely tired and low in energy and put that down to the usual Christmas build up, though that time was unusual as I live in Auckland and we lived with partial lockdown conditions. My children joined me for Christmas Day brunch and once the last of my family had left around 1.30pm I lay down on my couch for a rest as I was feeling unwell – something was off and did not feel right – head was spacy and my body was aching all over (I had not drunk any alcohol at brunch and very only occasionally drink). I awoke at 8.30pm that night and was still on the couch. It was getting dark outside. I had slept for almost 7 hours and was still feeling tired. I got off the couch and went to bed and slept for another 12 hours. The next day Boxing Day and I was due to catch up with friends, which I cancelled as I felt lethargic and energy levels were extremely low. Fortunately over this time period I was on leave so I was able to take time to rest. My usual daily routine would be to walk 5kms in the mornings and then swim for 30-60 minutes in the sea. I was unable to walk this distance and was lucky if managed 1-2kms and only able to take a dip in the sea rather than swim. After both the walking and the time spent in the water I was exhausted and required more quiet time to rest.

January 2022
I returned to work after the Christmas period on 10. I was in the office and in the early afternoon I began to feel very unwell. My head was feeling very light and spacy and my heart rate seemed erratic. I left work and went directly to Pharmacy in Takapuna to have my blood pressure taken. The reading was 180/140. Highest it has ever been. I rang my doctor for an appointment and first available one was 18/01/2023.

At this appointment my blood pressure was still high, though not as high as the previous week. I was prescribed blood pressure medication. I started on this medication, the dosage was increased twice.

My health was deteriorating, I was experiencing mind fog, my short term memory was deteriorating, along with my long term memory (I thought I was experiencing early dementia); pain in the base of my skull was constant, and the right hand side of my face began to droop. I was unable to work full time as my concentration, retention of detail and ability to stay present in a conversation was severely limited. At its worst I would have a conversation with a work colleague and then 15-20 minute later not be able to recall the detail of the interaction. If I did not write down the information it was if I had very reduced memory of it. My ability to focus was also impacted and was unable to follow conversations. It was apparent to my manager that I not following the detail – in his words my eyes became vacant and he could see my mind had shut down. He would tell me to go home and rest.

February – April 2022
Became increasing unwell – was only working about 10-15 hours weekly and when was able to concentrate.
A friend would face time me everyday to check in to see if was okay. The righthand side of my face was drooping and was apparent in both my eyes and my mouth, compounded with a constant pain in base of skull, ringing in my ears, brain fog and severe memory issues. It was increasingly difficult to work. Unable to remember conversations 30 minutes after having the interaction and long term memory continued to get worse. My driving was impaired – if I was driving at speed (usually over 50kph) on the motorway my spatial awareness was impacted (my job entails motorway driving each day and minimum 40-50kms daily). My doctor advised me to no longer to drive.

During this time underwent a series of tests including:
24 hours Blood Pressure monitoring
Thyroid tests
Parathyroid Tests
Blood, bone and parathryroid cancer testing

I had an appointment with Doctor at North Shore Hospital who told me he thought I was experiencing migraines and should take anti depressants and basically go away. I was unwell and not at all impressed with his approach. He did state that I may have been affected by the vaccine. I saw him again in June 2022 – he denied this.

April 2022
Began series of treatments along with supplements – physio, kinesiology and bowen began to feel slightly better – small improvements – though pain in base of skull and ringing in ears continued.

May 2022
Contracted Covid and again had difficulties breathing, severe headaches and high temperatures, plus lost my voice for 3 days. I had no energy to get out of my bed for 5 days, and not even enough energy to get up to shower ( I lay in bed and fantasized about showering and washing my hair). The only times I got up was to feed my cats, refill my water bottles and go to the toilet.
I was able to return to work after 10 days – my health was back where I had started in January 2022. Energy and concentration levels low, brain function impacted – memory and clarity, again pain in base of skull, increased heart rate and ringing in ears. Unable to work full time – between 15 – 20 hours weekly, with having stay at home and rest most days. Still unable to drive either distances or at speed.

June – July 2022

Energy and concentration levels low, brain function impacted – memory and clarity, again pain in base of skull, increased heart rate and ringing in ears. Unable to work full time – between 15 – 20 hours weekly, with having stay at home and rest most days. Still unable to drive either distances or at speed. Recommenced physio, kinesiology and bowen began to feel slightly better – small improvements – though pain in base of skull and ringing in ears continued.

August – November 2022

Underwent MRI on head area only in early August – following which experienced most severe pain in base of skull and was nauseous for next 24 hours and unable to work at all for next 3 days. My symptoms worsened after the MRI. I only ventured out of the house to work about 20 hours a week, and spent majority of time at home resting. I had attempted to go out socially and discovered I was unable to cope with big crowds, loud noises or bright lights – was sensory overload for me and my brain and my body would shut down.

December 2022

Mid December 2022 I began to feel a little more like my normal self, able to work a full work day though had to be careful about the environments and how much sound, and light was in the space.

January 2023
Early January 2023 I began to experience the same symptoms again. Dizzy floaty head, lack of concentration and clarity, ringing in ears and made the decision to resign from my job – I travelled down this path in 2022 and am aware how quickly my health deteriorated whilst working full time.

June 2023
I am now working part time in the retail sector – less than 30 hours weekly – this is all I can manage with my health, and have a substantially reduced income.

I am continuing to receive treatment and take supplements which are not funded by the government.
